Bringing Youth And Children To Events

Can children come to East Kingdom Events?

Yes!  Children are welcome at all events!

What are the guidelines to bringing children to East Kingdom Events?

The way our current policies are written, all youth at events must attend with a parent, guardian, or responsible adult designated by the parent or legal guardian.  The person bringing the child to the event is responsible for seeing to the child’s safety, well-being, and behavior.
  • All children under the age of five should be supervised at all times by their parents/guardians or a responsible adult or older teen.
  • Youth between the age of 5 and 10 must be within sight and sound range of a parent / guardian / responsible adult / teen supervisor at all times. Walkie-talkies and cell phones do not extend the sight / sound range.

This does not mean that one adult must be in charge of their youth(s) for an entire event.

For example, a child may want to visit Family Point to meet up with a friend or attend a class.  The parent can walk the child to Family Point and, with permission, leave the child with another parent or caretaker while they attend a class, do chores, fight at the lists, etc. and retrieve their child later at a designated time and place (ex. dinner time at another encampment).

Is there any additional paperwork needed when bringing a child to an event?

To bring a child to an event, you will need either:

Can I bring a child who isn’t mine (niece, nephew, grandchild, or friend of the family, etc.) to an event and what would I need to bring with me?

Yes!  If a child you know is interested in the SCA, you are more than welcome to bring them with you.  There are some pieces of documentation that you will need at gate:

If a parent or legal guardian is not there, can the youth participate in youth combat activities?

Yes!  All paperwork as described above is required to attend the event/practice and the person responsible for the child at the event will be required to sign the child in and leave a cell phone number in case of emergency.  However, the responsible party does not have to be at the list field unless at the request of the marshals or in the case of our youngest fighters. An adult is required to stay with the youngest fighters.  If you have questions about whether or not you need to stay, please ask the Marshal.

What about archery or thrown weapons?

There is no formal program for youth when it comes to archery and thrown weapons and all standard rules apply to youth, but the marshal may request a designated adult to oversee children and ensure their safety.  Check with the marshal in charge about their comfort level with youth at the range.
